BACKPACKING CHECKLIST

 

Pack in a backpack. Make sure all personal items are marked with the scout’s name. Remember the first rule of backpacking: An ounce in the morning feels like a pound at the end of the day!

 

Packing

___ Pack with padded hip belt

___ Waterproof pack cover

___ 2 extra 1 gal zip lock bags, 6 for week long trip

 

Sleeping

___ Sleeping bag in stuff sack lined with plastic bag

___ Sleep clothes – worn only in sleeping bag – tshirt and shorts

___ Straps to secure bag

___ Sleeping pad

 

Clothing Layer A – Hiking

___ Hiking boots – well broken in

___ lightweight sneakers for in camp use

___ 2 Pairs heavy outer socks

___ 2 Pairs thin liner socks

___ 2 Pairs underwear

___ Hiking shorts (zip offs good)

___ 2 short sleeve shirts

___ 1 cap or hat with brim for sun protection

 

Clothing Layer B – Cool Evening

___ 1 long sleeve shirt

___ 1 long pants (zip offs)

___ 1 pair long underwear – polyrpro – not cotton!

 

Clothing Layer C – Cold

___ Long sleeve fleece (thick)

___ Long sleeve fleece (thin)

___ Stocking cap

___ Glove liners

 

Clothing Layer D – Wet/Wind

___ 2 piece sturdy rain suit or outer shell (Goretex or Marmot type)

 

Eating

___ Plastic bowl

___ Cup

___ Spoon

___ 3 One quart Nalgenes

___ Hydration sack with hose and filter

 

Personal

___ Small pocketknife or Leatherman

___ Waterproof matches or lighter

___ Small flashlight

___ Map

___ Bandanna
